CALL FOR EXPRESSIONS OF INTEREST: Compiling the ’50-Year History of HERDSA: 1972-2022’

Expressions of interest are called for the position of researcher and author of the '50-Year History of HERDSA: 1972-2022’. To ensure that the origins of the HERDSA are documented and preserved, it is timely to compile the recollections of longstanding HERDSA members, many of whom were significant in the development of the Society, as HERDSA enters its sixth decade. HERDSA was formed at a pivotal time during the evolution of higher education in Australasia, when the importance and growth of academic development, and the scholarship of learning and teaching (SoTL) emerged and became consolidated.

The primary output will be in the form of an online report. Additional secondary electronic outputs will include artefacts such as podcasts of interviews with longstanding HERDSA members, current and past Presidents, award winners, Fellows etc, and photographs. The primary final report will include hyperlinks to the secondary electronic artefacts.

The successful applicant will be provided with access to a range of resources including the HERDSA Dropbox, Office (Jennifer Ungaro), Executive and other HERDSA members. Data to be collected by the successful applicant will include recording of interviews, collection and compilation of photos, and other relevant artefacts, as well as reviewing of HERSDA historical documentation including meeting minutes and reports.

The timeline for the project is 3 to 5 months, with the draft primary report due at the end of November 2022. The successful applicant will prepare and submit a detailed project plan to the HERDSA Office within 2 weeks of the appointment. The expectation is that 3 progress reports will be submitted at the end of the 3 main project stages, namely data gathering, analysis of the results, and the draft report stages. At the culmination of the project, guidelines as to how to manage and regularly update HERDSA’s history should be provided to the HERDSA Executive.

A budget of up to $20,000 has been allocated to this project.

Written expressions of interest must:

  • clearly demonstrate why the applicant is interested in this project,
  • provide an overview of the proposed approaches that will be taken to gather data,
  • provide a proposed structure for the primary output, the online report, including links to other data referenced in the report,
  • provide an overview of how the secondary electronic outputs and artefacts will be collated, presented, and shared with the Office,
  • include a project budget including provision for proof reading and editing, and
  • clearly address the essential criteria listed below.

 Essential criteria:

  • experience in academic research, primary data gathering and analysis,
  • a strong reputation in research and publication in higher education,
  • demonstrated expertise in project management, and
  • demonstrated commitment to the goals of HERDSA, including membership of HERDSA (preferred).

Please note that the EOI should be a maximum of 3 pages.
