The increasing popularity of intensive modes of learning has given rise to calls for greater insights into effectively organising and offering education in condensed, alternative formats. This Guide is a response to those calls, distilling key ideas from from the authors’ collective research and experience in leading the 2016 Intensive Mode Teaching Project funded by the Australian Government Department of Education and Training and supporting an institution-wide move by Victoria University to Block mode teaching starting in 2018. This work is complemented by case studies of current intensive mode offerings across Australian universities. This is our effort to support our readers’ endeavours by sharing our collective experiences and research.

This Guide is a starting point for academics and administrators seeking to move teaching from traditional to intensive mode. It is also a resource for a wider audience including professional learning facilitators. For those new to the concept of intensive modes, Section 1 provides a background to the key features and diversity of intensive modes. Others more familiar with this mode of study may prefer to start at Section 6 and use it as an index to guide selective reading. Alternatively, starting with the case studies located in Appendix A will provide context for specific sections of the Guide. We hope the reader finds this Guide a stimulating contribution to their journey into intensive modes of study.
