In memory of Angela Brew

You are here

It is with great sadness that we inform the higher education community of the passing of Angela Brew, a much-loved and deeply respected life-member of HERDSA.

Angela dedicated her academic career to improving the student experience of teaching and learning. She credited HERDSA with being a tremendous source of support, ideas, inspiration and friendship throughout her many years in higher education.

As past HERDSA President, Angela nominated getting HERDSA back into a strong financial position during a time of significant financial stress as her greatest contribution to the Society. Her experience in leading a network of scholars inspired her to set up the Australasian Council of Undergraduate Research to provide similar networking opportunities for undergraduate students.

Angela is perhaps better known among the HERDSA community for her work establishing the HERDSA Fellowship scheme to provide a way to gain recognition of teaching based on a portfolio. The original HERDSA Fellows were members of fellowship triadS that met with Angela whenever they hit a wall. It was Angela's clear vision of how reflection on teaching could lead to significant personal learning on what it means to be an effective teacher that steered that first cohort of registrants to receiving their fellowships.

Angela Brew was an inspiration and mentor to many of us and she will be greatly missed. We extend our heartfelt condolences to Angela's family and colleagues during this difficult time.

Angela is survived by her partner David Boud. Her funeral will be held on 17 April in the UK.
