HERDSA Webinar: Publishing in ASRHE
Wednesday 4th August, 1.00pm AEST

Advancing Scholarship and Research in Higher Education (ASRHE) is a new journal in the HERDSA stable. The purpose of the journal is to progress learning and teaching in higher education by advancing scholarship and research. As such, it invites both complete research and research in progress articles on higher education.

In the first half of this webinar, we will talk about three of the journal’s characteristics:
- Research in progress article category;
- Creative modes of dissemination of research;
- Group-based peer review process;

In the second part of the webinar we will discuss how to shape articles for submission to ASRHE (e.g., looking at research submitted in abstract form to the HERDSA conference). One of the resources we will use is Pat Thomson’s Planer’s Approach (https://patthomson.net/2019/09/16/a-planners-approach-to-the-first-draft/). Please sign up for this part of the webinar to facilitate our preparations.

Academic Development SIG Virtual Cafe Chat
August 20, 12-1pm New Zealand time, 10-11am Australian Eastern

Join us for a discussion about academic development at the strategic/organisational/pan-organisational level. We are honoured to have Emily Daniell Magruder guest host the session. Emily chairs the Professional Development Committee in POD and directs the Institute for Teaching and Learning in the California State University (CSU) Office of the Chancellor, the largest four-year public university system in the United States, with 23 campuses stretching over 1,300 km, enrolling 485,000 students who are served by over 28,000 faculty. She will share how academic development (still called faculty development) is structured across the 23 campuses, how the CSU Faculty Development Council and the system office support the professional development of centre directors and builds capacity to scale professional learning, and a few lessons learned during the pandemic. That will be followed by a discussion of things to think about, what needs to be in place, and the importance of academic developers having a system's view of their institutions and higher education ecosystems.

National Symposium on the Student Experience in Higher Education
Friday 17 September 2021

This Symposium looks to the future of Australian higher education and the key changes needed to improve the student experience. It asks how we preserve it during periods of disruption like we have experienced in the Covid-19 pandemic, and how we enrich it through better connections with the wider world. Join us for a conversation with thought-leaders, higher education researchers, educators, practitioners and community members to discuss new imperatives for the higher education sector. This symposium will be a hybrid event with the in-person gathering held at the University of Melbourne.

New NCSEHE-funded research: Country students at home on campus

New research has shown regional, rural and remote (RRR) students prioritise social factors in deciding where to study and live when relocating for university.

The project team, led by Dr Julia Cook from the University of Newcastle and funded by the National Centre for Student Equity in Higher Education (NCSEHE), found on-campus accommodation provided a sense of connectedness, but was not always inclusive of all students.
