Vale Ernest Roe

Vale Dr Ernest Roe, who died on 15 July, 2020 year aged 100, was a foundation member of HERDSA and served on the Executive for several periods and as President 19830-1985. In 1985 he was awarded Honorary life membership in recognition of his sustained contribution to HERDSA. He took the lead in planning and conducting the highly successful series of national workshops on evaluation skills when the concept was in its infancy. He was the founding Director of the Teaching and Educational Development Institute (TEDI) at the University of Queensland. His enthusiasm, expertise, wise counsel, and seemingly boundless energy have been given freely to enhance the reputation of the Society. We are all greatly in his debt.

HERDSA webinar series (August)
Thursday 13th August (3pm NZST, 1pm AEST & 11am AWST)

HERDSA state Branch chairs have launched a webinar series guided by the theme ‘Supporting and Sustaining a Community of Online Practice in Higher Education'.

For the month of August, HERDSA ACT branch is presenting a panel discussion chaired by Dr Pam Roberts (CSU) with Ass Prof Naomi Dale (University of Canberra), Dr. Debbie Lackerstein (UNSW Canberra), Marie Fisher (ACU), Tess Snowball (ANU).
The title of the presentation is "Viral assessment practices – Tracking the journey of ACT universities in responding to the challenges of the pandemic".

HERDSA Routledge Article of the Year Winner and Runners-Up

Congratulations to the winners, and the runners-up for the HERDSA-Routledge Article of the Year Award. HERDSA Routledge Reviewer of the Year Award

HERDSA and Taylor & Francis/Routledge have created a new Award, in order to recognize the outstanding contribution made by Higher Education Research & Development (HERD) reviewers. Following a rigorous judging process, we are delighted to announce that the 2020 winners of this Award are Sin Wang Chong and Shannon Mason. The judging panel commended both reviewers for their exceptional dedication in providing timely well-structured, clearly written reviews, which are consistently constructive in tone.

CAULLT Leadership Webinar

Registrations are open for the CAULLT Learning Leadership Webinar "Leadership for supporting inclusion and diversity in the Academy", presented by Dr Gail Cummins (USC). The presentation is based on her new book which captures specific examples of inclusive practices that are as diverse as the student and faculty populations, and are easy to translate and/or employ by senior administrators, academics and learning access/student support staff. This webinar will outline four principles of inclusivity that underpin specific interventions that can be adopted by leaders of learning and teaching.

Call for manuscripts: International Students and Graduate Employability from the Global South
​Call for proposals due: August 30, 2020

Currently, with Dr. Rosalind L. Raby (California State University, Northridge) and Dr. Krishna Bista (Morgan State University, USA), Dr Jasvir Kaur Nachatar Singh from La Trobe University is working on a book project International Students and Graduate Employability from the Global South to be published by Routledge (see the attached call for chapters).

Please send us your idea/abstract in 120 words or less using the form at https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSf3pEmskVjZWSH_Deff6aeceWCWTZvxYLc_xBopst2PrHlQ-Q/viewform. Would you also recommend a colleague/faculty or graduate student who might be interested in international education? 

The book aims to 1) explore the employability perceptions and experiences of international students from the global south who had studied in global north or south universities; 2) explore the employability perceptions and experiences of study abroad students from the global south who had studied in global north or south universities; 3) explore the employability perceptions and experiences of international or study abroad students from the global north studying in global south universities; 4) investigate the employability experiences of international students who had graduated from global south universities and who have been working in different labour markets; 5) discover strategies employed by international and study abroad students and graduates from global south in securing current and future employment; 6) examine support services provided by global north or south universities to international students or study abroad students from global south countries who attended those institutions; 7) study employers' experiences with international student graduates from global south pertaining to their employability.

Registration open for the Lessons Learned from the COVID-19 Response virtual symposium
September 4, 2020, 12:00 - 6:00pm New Zealand time

Registrations are now open for the free virtual symposium on September 4, on Lessons Learned from the COVID-19 Response, hosted jointly by the HERDSA Academic Development SIG and ASCILITE’s TELedvisors SIG. The symposium will be a series of facilitated Zoom meetings with reporting back to the general group to discuss four topics suggested by the community:
1. Supporting academics in the response: Successes and challenges in rapidly moving teaching and learning online
2. From response to business-as-usual in classroom teaching and learning: what do we keep from our teaching during the response and why?
3. Higher education post-covid, what will it look like and how can we support that?
4. What can we learn from others?
