Call for Contributions – Research and Development in Higher Education: Next Generation, Higher Education: Challenges, Changes and Opportunities
The submission deadline is 30 September 2019.

Authors of abstracts accepted for and presented at the 2019 HERDSA Conference are invited to submit a full paper based on the work described in their abstracts for publication in Research and Development in Higher Education: Next Generation, Higher Education: Challenges, Changes and Opportunities, Volume 42.

• Papers are to be submitted via email to Eva Heinrich (e.heinrich@massey.ac.nz). Please put ‘RDHE Submission’ as subject. Add the HERDSA Conference abstract id, as well as the names and affiliations of all authors to the email.
• The submission deadline is 30 September 2019.
• Papers should be between 3000 - 5000 words in length, including abstract, references and all appendices. Longer papers will not be accepted.
• Please ensure that you use the Paper template available online and follow the RDHE Formatting Guidelines available online. Submissions which do not follow the guidelines will be returned to authors and may not be reviewed. The paper should NOT contain any information that might identify the author/s. Please find the information at www.herdsa.org.au 

The journal editors will undertake the first review to determine whether your paper meets the aims and scope of the conference theme. If unsuitable, authors will be notified immediately. The remaining submissions will be double blind reviewed by reviewers selected by the journal editors.

The following review criteria apply for empirical papers.
• Relevance of the paper to the conference themes;
• Soundness of the research methods and critical analysis;
• Originality and contribution to scholarship;
• Clear and coherent presentation of the argument.

For conceptual/ analytical papers review criteria will include:
• Relevance of the paper to the conference themes;
• Soundness of the theoretical position and framework;
• Critical analysis;
• Originality and contribution to scholarship;
• Clear and coherent presentation of the argument.

The publication of the journal is anticipated for early 2020.

The five articles shortlisted for HERD Article of the Year

The Executive of HERDSA created a new award beginning in 2019. This award, the Higher Education Research & Development (HERD) Article of the Year is sponsored by Taylor & Francis, the publisher of HERD. It acknowledges the best article published in HERD v.37 (2018) as assessed by a panel selected by the Executive.

Five articles were shortlisted from a total of 105 articles published in the journal in 2018. All five shortlisted papers were judged to provide significant critical and/or analytical insights to the field of higher education, and were characterised by thorough literature reviews, sound methodology, persuasive, succinct, and coherent arguments, and were moreover, highly engaging. Hence, the judges had a particularly difficult task in deciding on the winner.

Taylor and Francis have made the best article freely accessible. The articles shortlisted for the Award will also be freely accessible for three months. The shortlisted papers are:

Promoting resilience through the Teaching Philosophy Statement

Preparing for and supporting challenging (struggling) learners
Monday July 29, 2.00pm

Recognising the causes of learners' behaviours may affect instructors' attitudes and responses to disruptive situations. In this workshop we will explore strategies for preventing, identifying and effectively managing destructive conflict cycles, power struggles, bullying, harassment and non-compliance in RHFS teaching contexts.

This is the second in a series of HERDSA sponsored workshops for the HERDSA South Australian Branch run by visiting academic Professor Dieter Schönwetter, Associate Dean Academic, University of Manitoba.
