Call for survey response to How academic staff at Higher Education Institutions are coping, in times of the COVID-19 Pandemic.
Survey closes May 15.

Dear Colleague,

The recent COVID-19 pandemic has forced Higher Education Institutions internationally to adopt digital teaching and learning methods. You are invited to participate in a survey aimed at researching how academic staff at Higher Education Institutions are coping, in times of the COVID-19 Pandemic.

The survey forms part of a collaborative research project between Dr Upasana G Singh, University of KwaZulu-Natal, Durban, South Africa (singhup@ukzn.ac.za); Prof Sid Nair, Victorian Institute of Technology, Australia; and Associate Professor Rashmi Watson, The University of Western Australia, Australia.

Ethical approval for this study has been granted at the:
1. University of KwaZulu-Natal, Durban, South Africa as per Protocol Reference Number: HSSREC/00001284/2020 with Dr Upasana G Singh as Principal Investigator.
2. Victorian Institute of Technology, Australia with Prof Sid Nair as Co-Investigator

It should only take 15 minutes to complete.

Your participation is completely voluntary and your identity,as well as that of your Institution, will be confidential.

This survey contains matrices which display better on a full size screen, so it is suggested you complete it on a desktop screen rather than a mobile.

We look forward to your response by Friday, 15th May 2020.

Please do not hesitate to contact me at singhup@ukzn.ac.za if you require any further information about this project.

The survey is available at https://tinyurl.com/y8dtuds7

We look forward to your participation.

Regards,

Dr Upasana Singh, Prof Sid Nair, Associate Prof Rashmi Watson

NCSEHE webinar: The WPO ‘Pivot’ — Shifting Widening Participation Outreach activities to a remote learning environment
Wednesday 10 June 2020

The National Centre for Student Equity in Higher Education (NCSEHE) will bring you a webinar on 10 June, presented by Kylie Austin and Meg Smith from the University of Wollongong (UOW). This webinar will describe how UOW’s Widening Participation and Outreach team has shifted the delivery of its program to a remote delivery mode. Underpinned by Dr Cathy Stone's National Guidelines for Improving Student Outcomes in Online Learning, the webinar will share the practices that have been adopted by the team in shifting the delivery of WPO activities to remote learning in a rapid timeframe.

The one-hour presentation will be focused on the practical delivery of remote outreach programs, sharing the highlights and challenges of the approach and also what this will mean for the future delivery of UOW’s WPO activities. These will be shared from the perspectives of practitioners, student mentors and students engaged in the programs. In addition to the practical implementation of remote WPO activities, the workshop will also cover tips for maintaining an institutional commitment to WPO in light of the current COVID-19 global pandemic.

Kylie and Meg will be joined by their university mentors and students engaging in the program.

The Great ACUR Undergraduate Research Writing Project!

The ACUR Student Committee in collaboration with members of the ACUR Executive  have recently launched a new initiative: The Great ACUR Undergraduate Research Writing Project. This is a competition open to all undergraduate researchers in Australasia and elsewhere to write about during the time of Covid-19. Details are on the website at: http://www.acur.org.au/acur/events-and-conferences/the-great-acur-undergraduate-research-writing-project/

Submissions consist of a 500-word written piece, or A3 poster, on the impacts of Covid-19 on a field of their academic interest.  A prize of $500 will be awarded to the winning submission and the best entries will be published in the November 2020 issue of Undergraduate Research News Australasia (URNA). Every reasonable entry will receive a year’s ACUR student membership.

We would very much like you to assist with this exciting project:

  1. Please spread the news about the competition throughout your institution and especially to undergraduates carrying out research and colleagues leading undergraduate research initiatives. A poster is available here for your use. You can download the instructions at:http://www.acur.org.au/acur/events-and-conferences/the-great-acur-undergraduate-research-writing-project/.
  2. Please apply to help with the reviewing. Each student entry will be double blind reviewed in order to ensure that the competition is of a high standard, so we need your help with reviewing. In appreciation, if you complete one or more reviews, your name will be included in the list of reviewers published on the ACUR website. You will find a form to register your interest in reviewing at https://www.acur.org.au/the-great-acur-undergraduate-research-writing-project-page-for-reviewers/

  3. You are also welcome to donate a prize. The more prizes are available, the more entries we are likely to get. Why not donate a prize for the best entry in your subject area? To find out more information and to donate, please email admin@acur.org.au or go tohttp://www.acur.org.au/acur/contributing-to-acur/donate/

Thank you for your support of this project.

With every good wish,

Emeritus Professor Angela Brew
Chair ACUR
