HERDSA Grants 2023
Grants close on 28th February 2023

HERDSA offers grants to HERDSA members to fund research and/or development projects on teaching and learning in higher education that directly align to the mission of HERDSA . In the 2023 round, up to six grants of AUD$5000 each are available (plus GST for expenses accruing in Australia). Priority for one grant will be given to applicants identifying as Indigenous/First Nations (e.g., Aboriginal, Torres Strait Islander, Māori or Pacific Nations).

The call for 2023 HERDSA Grant applications is now open. Applications close at the end of February 2023. Successful applicants will be informed at the end of May 2023. Grant holders have one year to complete their projects. Grant progress reports are due end of January 2024 and final reports end of June 2024.

With 2023 underway, we know a lot of you are putting the final touches on your abstract submissions for the 2023 program. If you haven’t started don’t worry, there is still time! You have until Friday 10 February (midnight AEST) to submit an abstract.

The 2023 conference will be a hybrid event. Your abstract may be considered for the onsite (conference venue) or the virtual (online) format: you will be asked to indicate your choice during the submission process.

Join the HERDSA SIG – Online Engagement in Higher Education

The HERDSA SIG is focused on the aspects that both hinder and foster online student engagement and is relevant to education researchers pursuing scholarly work on furthering the understanding of student engagement in higher education online learning. This may include, but is not limited to;
• student online engagement and non-engagement
• frameworks that inform online engagement
• pedagogical implications of online engagement
• facilitation and design of learning for online engagement
• assessment design for engagement
• teacher presence
• student motivation
• synchronous and asynchronous learning activities that foster student engagement and learning
• use of course learning analytics to track engagement or nudge engagement in learning,
• barriers and enablers of engagement; and
• affordances of educational technologies as a means of fostering online student engagement.

Searching and Reviewing the Literature on SoTL: An Academic Literacies Perspective

Two linked articles on ‘Searching and Reviewing the Literature on SoTL: An Academic Literacies Perspective, Part 1 and 2’ have been published by Teaching & Learning Inquiry, 11. https://journalhosting.ucalgary.ca/index.php/TLI/issue/view/5366

We learnt an enormous amount in writing the articles. We were previously familiar with less than a third of the 127 items we cite in the reviews. Hence, we think there may be ideas and guidance valuable for both experienced and new SoTL and pedagogic researchers.

Please pass details on to anyone whom you think may be interested. We would love to hear your responses to what we have written.
