IEAA Launches Research Digest: Impact of cohort mix on student experiences & educational outcomes

The student body in higher education institutions around the world is growing and becoming more diverse. At the same time, universities face increasing pressure to provide a high-quality learning experience and student services to remain competitive in the global higher education market.

Written by S. Umesha Weerakkody, this IEAA Research Digest looks at how the mix of domestic and international students in a cohort impacts the higher-education experience. It considers:
- the research literature on student experiences, characteristics and outcomes
- research trends and directions for future research
- new approaches that can be used to incorporate cohort mix into the analysis of higher education experience.

Invitation to participate: Research in fragile contexts

Dear colleagues,

You are invited to participate in a study regarding Educational Research in ‘Fragile Contexts’: Documenting Ethics-in-Practice Support for Higher Degree Research Students and Supervisors.

We are hoping to recruit doctoral supervisors and candidates who would like to share their experiences engaging in ethically complex, Cultural and Linguistic Diversity (CALD) related research, for e.g. research involving participants with histories of marginalisation, trauma, and precarious socio-political standing. Participants who are currently working together as students and supervisors are welcome, however this is not a requirement for inclusion.

We are particularly interested in facilitating knowledge exchange regarding HDR supervision practices and mechanisms for support regarding ethics-in-practice approaches (Guillemin & Gillam, 2004) in CALD/ forced migration settings.

Participants will be asked to undertake an online, semi-structured interview exploring their experiences regarding ethics-in-practice preparation and support for Higher Degree Research students and supervisors. The interview is expected to take approximately 30 minutes.

A Participant Information Sheet, which provides more detail about the study, is attached to this email. Please read the information sheet before deciding whether you would like to participate. If have any questions about the research, please contact:

Dr Rachel Burke
Senior Lecturer,
University of Newcastle
Rachel.Burke@newcastle.edu.au

If you are a PhD student researching in fragile contexts, please also consider passing on this invitation to your supervisor/s.
