Abstract

This paper reports on a project funded by the Quality Assurance agency in Scotland which looks at developing scholarship in first year students. The literature underpinning a variety of approaches to developing scholarship in students is explored and compared with examples of case studies gathered from different institutions which exemplify these approaches. Through both the consideration of the case studies and ‘listening’ to staff and student voices suggestions are made about the ways in which the theoretical frameworks from different epistemological underpinnings can be applied to the practicalities of the institutional setting and therefore the student experience.

Keywords: Scholarship, academic literacies, first year students.
