Call for survey response to How academic staff at Higher Education Institutions are coping, in times of the COVID-19 Pandemic.
Survey closes May 15.

Dear Colleagues,

The recent COVID-19 pandemic has forced Higher Education Institutions internationally to adopt digital teaching and learning methods.

You are invited to participate in a survey aimed at researching how academic staff at Higher Education Institutions are coping, in times of the COVID-19 Pandemic.

The survey forms part of a collaborative research project between Dr Upasana G Singh, University of KwaZulu-Natal, Durban, South Africa (singhup@ukzn.ac.za); Prof Sid Nair, Victorian Institute of Technology, Australia; and A/Prof Rashmi Watson, The University of Western Australia, Australia.

Ethical approval for this study has been granted at the:

1. University of KwaZulu-Natal, Durban, South Africa as per Protocol Reference Number: HSSREC/00001284/2020 with Dr Upasana G Singh as Principal Investigator.

2. Victorian Institute of Technology, Australia with Prof Sid Nair as Co-Investigator

It should only take 15 minutes to complete.

Your participation is completely voluntary and your identity,as well as that of your Institution, will be confidential.

This survey contains matrices which display better on a full size screen, so it is suggested you complete it on a desktop screen rather than a mobile.

The survey is available at https://tinyurl.com/y8dtuds7

We look forward to your response by Friday, 15th May 2020. Please do not hesitate to contact me at singhup@ukzn.ac.za if you require any further information about this project.

Launch of First in Family multimedia online documentary project

Launch of First in Family, a multimedia online documentary project led by Professor Anne Goldson and Dr. ‘Ema Wolfgramm-Foliaki and directed by Julie Zhu and Lila Bullen-Smith. First in Family explores the experience of 'First in Family' students (FiF) — defined as those whose parents did not attend higher learning institutions — as they make their way through a year of study, primarily their first, at the University of Auckland in 2019. The students profiled are enrolled in a range of disciplines and drawn from the Māori, Pasifika, international, former refugee and Pākehā working-class communities. The project exists as a standalone website (https://fif.op.co.nz/). We have featured six students who we interviewed, elements of these interviews were edited together into ‘YouTube' length excerpts and formed the basis to a series of biographies of the students. We worked with a series of photographers – Edith Amituanui, Julie Zhu, Renke An and Serena Stevenson, who shot photo essays of each student to add visual interest.
