Call for papers: Special Issue of “Active Learning in Higher Education”

Future-Proofing Higher Education: towards the Citizen Scholar

Submission deadline: 1 February 2017

The future of higher education is in question on a number of levels.  Firstly, no longer are universities the only producers of knowledge and information rather exist in an environment of increasing competition by alternative information providers.  Further, higher education institutions are progressively being asked to justify their traditional place in society with increasing scrutiny raising questions about both research undertaken and the quality of graduates produced.  As such, we need to fundamentally rethink how universities engage in teaching and learning, the skills, attributes and proficiencies of graduates as well as the connection between education and citizenship.  In this way, higher education institutes should not only promote excellence in scholarship as part of the student journey, but a sense of engaged and empowered citizenship – establishing the Citizen Scholar.

We call for contributions that emphasise the social mission of higher education and that integrates a cross section of proficiencies and attributes that are essential for preparing our students for both contemporary challenges as well as a world dominated by uncertainty and disruption.

We invite contributions to this special issue that explore innovative pedagogical innovations that support the creation of the Citizen Scholar.  Contributions may look at proficiencies, address practical methods used to promote skills or present a broader discussion of the issues raised by the challenges confronting universities.

If you have any queries about the nature/type of any contribution which might fit with this special issue, please contact
 James Arvanitakis (j.arvanitakis@westernsydney.edu.au) or
David J Hornsby (david.hornsby@wits.ac.za).

When you are ready to submit your paper/article, please submit it to the Editor, in the normal way. (https://au.sagepub.com/en-gb/oce/journal/active-learning-higher-educatio...)
