SIG events at HERDSA

HERDSA Conference Special Interest Groups (SIGs) - Information and break-out sessions.

HERDSA encourages you to attend a Special Interest Groups (SIGs) information session to meet and collaborate with like-minded researchers. 

The information session will be:
1. An opportunity to meet other researchers and discuss topics of shared interest
2. An explanation of SIGs and how they will work
3. A description of how to set up a SIG and the relevant Terms of Reference 
4. The chance to start a SIG with advice from HERDSA facilitators

You may also wish to join one of the break-out sessions for existing SIGs including: STEM Education, Assessment Quality, and Academic Development.

Take some time at HERDSA 2018 to Talk About “your” Teaching And Learning (TATAL) 

Is it time to ‘hit the pause button’ and reflect on my teaching? Do I have a teaching philosophy? Well! TATAL might be for you. The 8th HERDSA TATAL workshop offers an opportunity to share, reflect and review the values and beliefs that underlie your approach to teaching and learning. 

We’re ‘flipping out’ at Adelaide HERDSA TATAL this year. The half-day workshop is supported by an online preconference learning experience. Following the conference, you can continue the experience with the workshop group to develop a teaching portfolio suitable for a HERDSA Fellowship application.

IEAA request for tender: education designer/s
Expressions of interest close Friday 29 June 2018, 5pm.

IEAA is inviting submissions from interested parties – with expertise in educational design and online learning – to lead the development and implementation of a new Professional Learning Framework.

As part of our Strategic Plan 2018–2020, IEAA seeks to establish a dynamic, high-quality Professional Learning Framework (PLF) that meets the diverse needs of our members and is globally recognised by 2020.

Phase 1 of the project is already complete, with a comprehensive report that outlines key recommendations and proposed architecture. We are now seeking submissions from interested parties (individuals or groups), with expertise in educational design and online learning, to project manage the development and implementation of Phase 2.

Key deliverables include:

  • Develop and design of an initial suite of 10 online learning modules
  • Work with subject matter experts to write and develop content for each module
  • Scope suitable Learning Management System (LMS)... and more.

The Future of Academic Work: A Deliberative Conference

Twenty years ago, one-in-ten Australians had a university degree; today, it’s one-in-four. Over that time graduations have more than doubled, and universities have become sites of mass higher education. In the changed university, what is the role of academics?

This one-day conference seeks to initiate a debate about the changing nature of academic work in universities, and beyond. It debates a landmark report on the emergence of education-focused academics in universities, conducted under the (former) Office for Teaching and Learning.

Summary of three policies about undergraduate and postgraduate students in the same course/ subject/ module

Some time ago I sent two requests about policies pertaining to undergraduate and postgraduate students studying together in the same course (subject/ module). I received three substantive replies from colleagues in three Australian institutions – two ATN universities and one private higher-education and vocational-education provider. Many thanks to the folk who responded with interesting and helpful descriptions. In all three universities, the norm is not to have “parallel teaching” of undergraduate and postgraduate students together. However, two institutions allow the practice under certain circumstances, and the third is considering the adoption of guidelines for the situation. Some pertinent points from the three responses:
• It should be noted that neither Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF), nor the Higher Education Standards Framework (HESF) specifically prohibit shared learning arrangements, provided the integrity of all award courses is maintained.
• In one institution, approval is on a case-by-case basis to the appropriate university committee. In that same institution, there is a limit imposed by policy for the amount of credit towards a postgraduate qualification that can be attributed to undergraduate courses. The concept of limiting the practice of parallel teaching is also as aspect of the proposed guidelines mentioned above.
• In all institutions, matching of learning outcomes and assessment tasks to the appropriate Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) level is a priority and is carefully scrutinized.
• One model is for courses with parallel teaching to have different syllabus statements and assessments, though students share resources, including lectures and reading materials. Postgraduate students may be offered additional classes/ learning resources to those provided for the undergraduate courses.
• One institution mandates that students in all courses with parallel teaching of undergraduate and postgraduate students are surveyed under the aegis of the Academic Board and the feedback provided by students is reviewed to improve the design of future courses. 
• The same institution mandates separate course codes and an explicit statement in the course outline that parallel teaching will occur.
• One institution reported anecdotal evidence that fee-paying postgraduate students do not appreciate ‘dilution’ of the course by undergraduate students. 
• The points above are echoed in policy documents of other Australian institutions that I have found.

Ortrun Zubere-Skerritt receives an Order of Australia
Ortrun Zuber-Skerritt received an Order of Australia for her work popularising action research within the Australian higher educaiton sector. Ortrun was an early member of HERDSA when she worked in the Centre for the Advancement of Learning and Teaching (CALT) at Griffith University. An active researcher in higher education Ortrun has published widely on action learning, postgraduate supervision and action research methodologies.
