Student Experience Symposium Invitation

Dear Colleague,

You are warmly invited to participate in our National Symposium which is the culminating event for the Office for Learning and Teaching Commissioned project Shaping the 21st Century Student Experience at Regional Universities.  Project findings are applicable sector-wide, and you may wish to attend the event or share the invitation with your colleagues. The event will be held at the University of Technology Sydney, Aerial Function Centre on 8th September 2016.

Registration: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLScQPwJUDsjEcyQGyQDSw5Fj3XDrzi7pVQ047vgQbwu3d2V6CQ/viewform?c=0&w=1

Symposium details, including the program, are available online.  Registration and attendance is free, however places are limited by the venue size. Refreshments and lunch will be provided during the day.

While the project sought to understand the 21st century experiences of the diverse undergraduate student populations of regional universities, the outcomes and findings are relevant to all institutions irrespective of their size or location.  The key findings reveal new and exciting information about the student experience and how curricula and co-curricula initiatives shape student experiences of higher education.  The key findings have been translated into implications for practice and these lessons are available for immediate take-up across the sector.

At this event we will share:

  • Highlights about the data that are important for managing and measuring the student experience
  • Understandings of innovative practices used in eight universities to positively shape the student experience
  • New information that sheds light on activities that shape the experience and success of higher education students

We will also explore:

  • Eight case studies of institutional practices that shape the student experience
  • Good practice vignettes that can be adapted for your context
  • Strategic imperatives and recommendations for the sector

There will be opportunities for robust and stimulating discussion, and all participants will be provided with a comprehensive package of materials.

Please contact the Project Manager, Dr Ian Stoodley (istoodle@usc.edu.au) for further information.

On-day Symposium - From the Margins to the Centre: the Future of University Literacy Support and Writing across the Curriculum
Tuesday 27 September

Student literacy and writing development are responsibilities shared across the University and among the best strategies are institution-wide, cross-curriculum approaches that place literacy at the centre of student experience. The one-day symposium, From the Margins to the Centre is a catalytic event to invite discussion and reflection on policies and practices in support of undergraduate student literacy and writing in Australasian universities. Showcasing and interrogating a selection of paradigm-busting practices from across the country and New Zealand, From the Margins to the Centre provides an opportunity to speak across the boundaries that usually segregate us into our disciplines, professions, structural silos, and administrative allegiances. Following the symposium, a call for papers will be circulated for a planned publication and participation in a growing network.

As many universities face a critical challenge to meet increased demand for student support with limited resources and student services that are stretched to their limits, writing and literacy development can no longer be viewed through the lens of deficit remediation for domestic and international students alike. Universities need to establish more broad-based, university-wide measures to ensure that students gain capacity and ability in critical reading and written expression so that literacy remains a mark of “higher” education.

The diversity of our student cohorts and the distinctiveness of our institutions guarantee that one size does not fit all. Institutional responses must be developed in context, sensitive to student needs and in conjunction with other structural supports within the university. We have assembled two panels of practitioner scholars who will share experiences from their universities so that we might consider where our next steps will take us. We welcome an active audience to engage with our guest speakers:

Siri Barrett-Lennard (UWA)
Lisa Emerson (Massey, NZ)
Steve Johnson (Murdoch)
Andrea Lynch (James Cook)
Christine Oughtred (Deakin)
Judith Peacock (QUT)
Alisa Percy (Wollongong)
Susan Thomas (Sydney)
