Allan Goody

Dr Allan Goody [B.Bus (USQ) M.Ed (Illinois) Ed.D (Illinois)] is an academic developer with a broad interest in the development of academics as teachers, particularly early career academics. He also has strong interest in service learning, teams and team learning, and student engagement and active learning. Allan completed graduate studies in adult and higher education at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign where he was a Wilkens Scholar, held a University Fellowship and was awarded the Education Alumni Association Outstanding Doctoral Student Medal.

With over 25 years experience in teaching in universities, Allan has worked in academic development in the United States, Sweden and Australia – most recently in the Centre for the Advancement of Teaching and Learning (CaTL) at the University of Western Australia (UWA). In the US he worked predominantly with graduate teaching assistants. At UWA he coordinated the Foundations of University Teaching and Learning program and the Postgraduate Teaching Internship Scheme, an academic development program for PhD students, since its inception in 2000 through 2007. The Internship Scheme was recognized by AUQA and was awarded a Carrick Award for Australian University Teaching in 2006. Allan is a former director of CaTL. He is also the co-founder of and an ongoing contributor to the Foundations Colloquium group whose focus is programs that prepare university academics to teach. He was a member of the inaugural Executive of the Council of Australian Directors of Academic Development (CADAD) that helped establish that body. 

Allan has worked on a range of projects particularly those with a focus on teaching and learning and equity and diversity. He was a member of the six-person project team leading the ALTC- funded project Preparing Academics to Teach in Higher Education (PATHE) and another ALTC project  conducted by CADAD on supporting sessional staff in higher education. He is also on the reference group for a number of other ALTC projects. Allan has a strong commitment to social justice, equity and diversity and is the co-founder of the ALLY Network at UWA, the first such network at an Australian university that promotes greater visibility and awareness of gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and intersex (GLBTI) staff and students and their issues. The ALLY Network has since been adopted widely across Australian universities. Previously an elected member of the HERDSA national executive, Allan has been the Convening Editor of the HERDSA Guide series since 2002.
