  Call for contributions

We invite you to submit proposals for HERDSA 2005: Higher Education in a Changing World. Submissions which address the conference themes are invited as either fully refereed papers or abstracts.

HERDSA 2005: Higher Education in a Changing World will provide a vibrant scholarly space to critically and creatively engage with new ideas and research about teaching and learning. It will leave you re-invigorated and with new insights, as well as new friends and research collaborators! HERDSA 2005 will be a conference where our diverse and varied membership can meet and share their experiences, research, ideas and reflections on higher education in a changing world.

As well as the traditional research and theory papers - with plenty of time for discussion - and showcases of innovative practice, have you ever thought about discussing your ideas in an 'ideas marketplace' or during a ‘walk and talk’? When you submit your proposal, think about how best you might share your work at the conference itself and indicate your preferred presentation type in your submission. In the interest of maximizing participation by a broad range of presenters, please restrict your contributions (individual and jointly) to no more than three submissions.

  TYPES OF CONTRIBUTIONS
  1) Refereed Paper
You may submit a paper for a Paper Presentation or Showcase Session, to be considered for the refereed Conference Proceedings through a blind peer review process. Papers submitted for the Proceedings will be refereed, by at least two international reviewers selected by the Conference Committee, according to Australia's Department of Education, Science and Training (DEST) refereeing standards.

Refereed papers will be published in the Conference Proceedings, “Higher Education in a Changing World,” Research and Development in Higher Education, Volume 28, (hard copy) and on CD Rom.

Paper word limit: 3000-4000 words. Please ensure that you follow the HERDSA paper guidelines for formatting (pdf file).

Closing date for submission of refereed papers is 15 February 2005.

  2) Abstract
You may submit an Abstract only, for a Paper Presentation, Showcase or Activity session. Upon acceptance, the abstract can (if desired) be developed into a non-refereed Paper to be published on the conference CD Rom. Word limit for abstracts: 250 words.

Closing date for submission of abstracts is 15 February 2005.

  TYPES OF SESSIONS
  1) Paper Presentations
(refereed or non-refereed). Paper Presentations should be interactive but would normally report on a piece of substantial research or theory. They will be timed for 40 minutes to provide time for considered discussion. Several cognate Paper Presentations may be grouped (either by a group of authors or by the committee) to form a Symposium.

Please submit an abstract and full paper for review by 15 February 2005. Accepted papers will be published in “Higher Education in a Changing World,” Research & Development in Higher Education, Volume 28.

  2) Showcase Sessions

(refereed or non-refereed). Showcase Sessions will be interactive and would normally focus on a piece of innovative practice (which may or may not draw on theory). They will be timed for 20 minutes per showcase. Several cognate Showcases may be grouped (either by a group of authors or by the committee) to form a Symposium.

Symposia may include a combination of Papers and Showcases (e.g. a Paper reporting theoretically-based research on assessment, may be followed by a couple of Showcases focusing on innovative examples of assessment practice).

Please submit an abstract and, if desired, a full paper for review by 15 February 2005. Accepted refereed papers will be published in “Higher Education in a Changing World,” Research & Development in Higher Education, Volume 28.

  3) Activity Sessions

(non-refereed). Activity Session is the term used to describe a variety of contributions focusing on, for example, a speculative idea, a technique, a creative use of space, a walk and talk session, an experiential exercise, a poster or a demonstration. Imagine a space with lots of activity: small groups sitting round a table discussing, clusters of people sharing ideas around a poster, or a computer terminal, with other small groups of people using outside spaces for creative activities of various kinds. Activity Sessions will be scheduled for 30 minutes.

Please submit an abstract for review by 15 February 2005. Upon acceptance, abstracts may, if desired, be turned into full papers for inclusion in the non-refereed CD Rom Conference Proceedings.
